OUR STORY

Childcare Support & Education Organization (Childcare) stands as a testament to the power of compassion, ignited by the unwavering dedication of two Volunteers of good faith, Grace Agaba and Mutungi Steven.

When Grace returned from the USA for her holidays, she found a group of village children not attending school. Among them were school dropouts due to failure to raise school fees, some were Girl Child Mothers, and while others were orphans who had lost one or both parents to the AIDS/HIV pandemic. Most of these suffering children were girls, while a few boys practically engaged in herding cattle.

Grace was deeply moved by their plight. Many of these children came from extremely poor families in the community AND some of the adults didn’t see the value in education, because some of them got married / made families when their levels of education was low. They forgot that some of this success came through luck and that in this generation, education was essential for survival.

Grace’s heart went out to these children, especially since she could relate to their struggles as an orphan fighting for education herself and those of her siblings. Determined to make a difference, Grace joined hands with Mutungi Steven, and mobilized some community families where these children were residing and offered part time classes under a Mango Tree at there home so that part of the day they attend to cattle / Digging while rest of the hours that’s when they come over for classes.

As the number grew, Grace got a vision to construct wooden classrooms. Grace returned back to USA, Using her Salary savings added to mobilized funds, she sent money to buy Land and construct wooden classes. As community witnessed the donations that Grace had done to their families, so the Community Support Officer at Sub-County sent to those wooden classes extra children so a mixture of both paying and non paying students merged and the number grew up that the wooden classes wouldn’t accommodate. Grace’s Salaries + Mobilisation of funds from USA gave the birth of Destiny primary and Destiny Secondary school

However, these children much as they were supported with school fees at school, Parents failed to raise money for School uniform, Feeding at school, Pads for Girls, Shoes and books. Grace and Steve realized the kids were going to seat again since parents cant afford those basic necessities much as Grace had supported on afew. Together with a team of other community members, Grace founded this NGO  for what became Childcare Support & Education Organization (Childcare).

Childcare emerged as a beacon of hope, offering more than just classrooms. Through Destiny Primary School and Destiny Secondary School, they provided shelter, empowerment, and the promise of a brighter future to countless children in need.

But our journey wasn’t without challenges. We faced resistance from School drop-out youths and young mothers (women) in the community who came from impoverished backgrounds. Many of them didn’t see the importance of education, clinging to the belief that success could be achieved without it. Grace and Steven knew they had to change this mindset to break the cycle of poverty and ignorance.

As the sun set over the hills of Kanoni, their call for action resonated far and wide. They invited others to join them in their mission to uplift, empower, and transform lives through Skilling and Vocational Training Programmes.

Thank you for being a beacon of hope for those in need. Together, let’s light the way to a brighter future for the children of Kanoni and beyond.
