In rural areas like Kazo District, access to clean water, hygiene & sanitation is more than a basic need. It shapes whether children attend school, how they learn, and whether they can do so with dignity. No child should fall sick because of the water they drink or miss school because there is no safe toilet to use.
Through our Clean Water & Toilets Projects, Childcare Support & Education Organisation works with schools and communities to improve water and sanitation conditions. The focus is practical and school-based, reducing preventable illness and creating learning environments where children feel safe and supported.
Our work is centered at Destiny Primary School and Destiny Secondary School, where our field activities bring these solutions to life. From here, our impact flows outward to reach more children, families, and schools across Kazo District.
Many rural schools still rely on outdated pit latrines or lack usable sanitation facilities altogether. Inadequate toilets, limited handwashing facilities, and poor menstrual health support place children at risk, especially girls, and contribute to absenteeism and dropout.
Childcare addresses these challenges through a combination of infrastructure support and hygiene education. Working with school management, parents, and local leaders, we:
- Revamp old pit latrines into modern ventilated toilets
- Build separate girls’ and boys’ toilet blocks equipped with handwashing stations
- Run hygiene education campaigns in schools and surrounding communities
- Train pupils and staff on sanitation practices and long-term maintenance
- Distribute hygiene kits, including reusable sanitary pads for girls
Who We Support
- Orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs)
- Children from extremely low-income households
- Child mothers and school dropouts
- Children in families affected by HIV/AIDS or domestic instability
In many villages, children walk long distances to collect water from rivers or unprotected sources. By the time they arrive at school, they are often tired and carrying water that may not be safe to drink. This affects both health and learning.
We work with schools and community leaders to:
- Improve water access through sustainable systems
- Build and renovate safe toilet facilities
- Promote hygiene and menstrual health management
- Educate students and families on waterborne disease prevention
At Childcare Support, we help transform these schools into safe and welcoming learning environments by focusing on:
- Revamping old pit latrines into modern, ventilated toilet blocks
- Constructing water wells or protected springs near schools and community centers
- Providing safe water storage tanks for schools with limited water catchment
- Installing handwashing stations with soap and tippy taps at classrooms and toilets
- Launching school-based hygiene clubs to teach health practices
- Community hygiene awareness drives led by youth volunteers
- Solar-powered water pump installations where electricity is unavailable
OUR IMPACT
What changed after the Clean Water & Toilets Projects were introduced?
When Childcare partnered with Destiny Primary and Destiny Secondary, everything began to change. Through our Clean Water & Toilets Projects, we introduced practical, community-driven improvements:
- A new water well, generously funded by the Rotary Club of Greater Van Nuys, was installed in Kanoni community providing fresh, drinkable water to over 300 children and teachers daily.
FAQ
What problem was the community facing before Childcare partnered with the schools?
Before Childcare Support & Education Organisation stepped in, many rural schools in Kazo District were struggling to provide even the most basic learning conditions. Children faced long walks to overcrowded or semi-functional classrooms, many made from mud and timber. Some had no toilets. Some had no water.
What solutions has Childcare helped bring to the community?
Since the launch of the Rural Schools’ Improvement & Child Support Program, things have begun to shift. Working through Destiny Primary School and Destiny Secondary School as anchor institutions, and in close collaboration with Government, Ministry of Education & local communities, Childcare has helped create real, visible progress.
