VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT FOR YOUTH AND WOMEN IN RURAL UGANDA
Poverty, unemployment, and school dropouts continue to affect the most vulnerable groups in our rural communities. Young people without formal training and women, especially young mothers, are often left with no stable source of income and limited options to support their families.
At Childcare Support & Education Organisation (Childcare), we run a grassroots-driven Vocational Training and Skill Development Program focused on two core groups:
- Unemployed youth, especially school dropouts
- Low-income women, including single mothers and caregivers
Many young people in Kazo District drop out of school before completing basic education. Others finish school but remain unemployed, with no training and no pathway into work. Some are young mothers raising children alone. Others are teenage boys who feel disconnected and unsupported.
Our Youth Skilling for Jobs Initiative is designed to give these youth a second chance. We focus on practical, short-term training in trades that can lead directly to income.
Core activities include:
- Vocational training in tailoring, hairdressing, carpentry, shoemaking, and baking
- Counseling and mentorship, especially for school dropout girls and young fathers
- Business skills training, including record-keeping, pricing, and customer care
- Introduction to Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) for basic financial literacy and group saving
Many women in Kanoni and surrounding communities live on the edge of survival. They rely on seasonal farming, borrowed money, or support from relatives. Young mothers, especially those who left school early, are the most affected.
Through our Women’s Enterprise Support program, we work with women who are ready to do more if only someone will walk with them.
- Small business skills training, covering how to start, run, and grow a business at home
- Support in forming or joining cooperatives or informal business groups
- Introduction to Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), helping women build habits of saving, lending, and investing together
- Provision of small business startup kits (e.g., tailoring kits, food processing tools, vegetable seedlings or poultry)
- Regular peer group meetings to share ideas, encouragement, and challenges
