History of Childcare
This is not only my story. It is my heart.
"Over thirty years ago, my life changed in a single day."
Before, I was a high school student in Uganda, the eldest of seven children. After, I was an orphan responsible for six siblings, the youngest only five, when our parents were killed in a tragic car accident. At nineteen, still a child myself, I left school and worked in a women's clothing store to feed, clothe, and nurture my family.
That painful beginning became the seed of a greater calling.
A Journey of Faith and Determination
New Beginnings in America
Grace moved to America and trained as a Certified Nursing Assistant, supporting her family back home.
Returning Home
She returned to Uganda and was overwhelmed by the poverty she saw: countless children orphaned by HIV/AIDS and malaria, families too poor to meet basic needs, and many unable to afford school.
Benches Under a Tree
She started small, placing benches under a tree for eight children and one teacher. Within three months, over a hundred children gathered to learn.
Destiny Christian School Is Born
Feeding them was a struggle, but the need was undeniable. She rented a classroom, then secured a bank loan to buy land and build simple wooden structures with dirt floors. From these humble beginnings, Destiny Christian School was born.
Childcare Support & Education Organisation Founded
Grace founded Childcare Support & Education Organisation, a nonprofit that now supports Destiny Christian School and its growing services.
Still Building
Destiny serves more than 500 children, orphans, abandoned, and vulnerable, from kindergarten through high school. Dormitories are under construction, a vocational program is planned to turn students into job creators, and a health clinic is being prepared to care for children living with HIV/AIDS.
Sustaining the Work
Grace continues to work tirelessly, taking on even double nursing shifts as a Licensed Vocational Nurse, to sustain the salaries of 30 teachers and provide food, clothing, and education for the children in her care.
